In Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district, a pet dog was allegedly set upon a police team that had arrived to inspect a suspicious vehicle following a tip-off regarding drugs. In this attack, a head constable was bitten on the stomach by the dog. Police have registered a case in this matter against five people, including three men and two women, under sections 132 and 121 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

What happened

A three-member team from the Hamirpur police station and the Bhota police assistance room had reached the Tiala Ghat area of the Bhota region. A suspicious vehicle was parked on the roadside near a house there. The incident is reported to have occurred around 10.30 on Sunday night. According to the police, when the team began questioning the occupants of the vehicle, a person sitting in the back seat allegedly ran inside the house. It is alleged that he then set the dog on the police team.

It is reported that two police personnel managed to escape, while the head constable was bitten on the stomach by the dog. The injured policeman underwent a medical examination and was administered an anti-rabies injection. It is also alleged that during this time, two women arrived at the spot and attempted to obstruct the police action.

What the SP said

Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh Thakur stated that the team had been sent to inspect a vehicle based on a secret tip-off. According to him, the people present at the scene did not cooperate with the police and allegedly set the pet dog on them during the operation. The complaint accuses the occupants of the vehicle, the person who fled the scene, and the two women of inciting the dog. All these are currently allegations and are under investigation.

Status of the investigation

The police are investigating the sequence of events, the roles of the accused, and the statements of those present at the scene, and are also scrutinizing the past records of the named accused. Whether there were actually any narcotics in the vehicle the team had arrived to inspect has not yet been revealed. Reports also do not mention any arrests.

Which sections are involved in the case

Section 132 of the BNS pertains to assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duty. Section 121 covers cases of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing their duty.
