Kanpur: 18 carat hallmarking, but purity only 10 percent; four including a woman who came to sell jewelry taken into custody
Kanpur. A woman who arrived at a jewelry showroom on Birhana Road on Friday evening to sell jewelry with fake hallmarks was caught due to the alertness of the showroom staff. The chain and two rings had 18 carat hallmarking, but a machine test revealed their purity was only 10 percent. Based on the showroom manager's complaint, the police have registered a case […]

How the matter was caught in the showroom
According to showroom manager Ashish Dalmia, Suman Singh, a resident of Safipur Lalbangla in Chakeri, came to sell a chain and two rings on Friday evening. The total weight of the jewelry was 18.440 grams. When gold manager Deepak Agarwal placed them on the machine to check the purity, the result was only 10 percent, whereas the jewelry bore a 18 carat hallmark.
The amount of pure gold in 18 carat gold is 75 percent. 10 percent purity is equivalent to approximately 2.4 carats.
What emerged during questioning
The showroom staff stopped the woman and questioned her. According to initial police information, the woman stated that the jewelry was given to her to sell by a known bullion trader, Akshay Gupta. Following this, Ashish Dalmia informed the police.
Feelkhana Station House Officer Reena Singh said that during questioning, Akshay mentioned a shop in Chowk Bazaar. The police reached there and seized a machine. The police are questioning Suman, Akshay, Ayush, and Rahul. It is not yet clear what connection this machine has to the jewelry.
Investigation still underway
At the time of writing, the police had not confirmed any formal arrests. It is also a matter of investigation where the jewelry with fake hallmarks was prepared and how much such jewelry has already been sold in the market. Determining guilt in the matter is the work of the investigation and the court.
Caution for buyers
Jewelry hallmarked by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) bears a HUID code. This code can be verified using the BIS Care app, so it is useful to check this before buying or selling jewelry.
