The Railways has signaled progress on the demand to connect Mathura and Aligarh directly by rail. According to the railway administration, a final location survey for the proposed line will be initiated. This line is to be connected to the Mathura-Kasganj rail section via Mendu railway station. The project has not yet received approval, so the future course of action will depend on the results of the survey.
Demand by MPs and railway meeting
Mathura MP Hema Malini had written a letter to the General Manager of North Central Railway on 14 September, demanding the laying of the Mathura-Aligarh rail line. A meeting between railway officials and MPs from the Agra division was held on Friday, in which this proposal was also discussed. Aligarh MP Satish Gautam and Hathras MP Anoop Pradhan have also raised this demand earlier.
Agra Division Public Relations Officer Sanjay Gautam stated that the matter was discussed in the meeting and work is underway in this direction. He said that a decision will be taken soon.
Future course to be decided after survey
The final location survey is considered a crucial phase of this project. Only after this will the construction approval, budget, and timeline for the commencement of work be determined. Currently, no official information regarding any of these has been released. If the project gets the green signal after the survey, rail connectivity between the two cities could be strengthened.
60 kilometers distance, but no direct rail line
Mathura and Aligarh are neighboring cities, and the distance between them is approximately 60 kilometers. Despite this, there is no direct rail line between the two, forcing passengers to rely on road or other available modes of transport. Once the proposed line is built, commuting could become easier. Daily commuters are expected to benefit the most from this.
