Pargat Singh to take charge of Punjab Congress today, Sachin Pilot to be present; says Rahul Gandhi will be the face in the elections

Chandigarh. Pargat Singh will formally take charge as the Punjab Congress state president at the Punjab Congress Bhawan located in Sector-15, Chandigarh, on Sunday. Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot will attend the ceremony. Reaching the Congress Bhawan on Saturday, Pargat Singh said that many leaders in the party, including him, have the capability to become Chief Minister, but Rahul Gandhi will be the face of the Congress in the 2027 assembly elections.

Ceremony and message of unity

The Congress high command appointed Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on 2 October, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Following this, he had been on a tour of several cities, including Amritsar, with Pilot since 8 October, which also included paying obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib. Sunday's ceremony is being considered the conclusion of this tour. Before the 2027 elections, the Congress is viewing this as an opportunity to send a message of unity within the organization.

There was earlier talk of Congress General Secretary (Organization) KC Venugopal also attending the ceremony. However, according to the latest information, his program has been cancelled due to prior commitments.

Pargat Singh said on Saturday that unity is the strength of the Congress. He stated that many leaders in the party have the capability to become Chief Minister, and he is among them. However, Rahul Gandhi will be the party's face in the upcoming assembly elections. He indicated that the party must rise above individual ambitions and move forward with collective leadership. Amidst discussions regarding leadership and claims to the Chief Minister's post in the state, this statement of his is being considered significant.

Allegations against BJP and AAP

Pargat Singh accused the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party of engaging in a "fixed match." According to him, both parties are diverting attention from the real issues of Punjab. He alleged that the central government is misusing the ED and CBI, while the AAP government in Punjab is using the Punjab Police and Vigilance Bureau against its political opponents. These are Pargat Singh's allegations, and no response from the BJP or AAP had been received at the time of writing this report.

The challenge ahead

Assembly elections are to be held in Punjab early next year. Coordinating between different factions and senior leaders within the party is considered a major challenge for Pargat Singh. After he takes charge, the party's election activities are expected to intensify.
