Political tussle in Mumbai ahead of Chhath Puja; MNS and Shinde's Shiv Sena face off over pollution SOP
Amid preparations for Chhath Puja in Mumbai, a political controversy has erupted over pollution and environmental protection. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded that the government and administration issue special guidelines, or an SOP, to prevent pollution along the coasts and rivers during Chhath Puja. The party says […]

The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has objected to this demand by the MNS. Leaders of the Shinde faction allege that Hindu festivals are being repeatedly targeted in the name of environmental protection. Following this war of words, the political atmosphere in Mumbai has heated up ahead of Chhath Puja.
MNS raises the issue of pollution, also demands the creation of artificial ponds
MNS Vice President and leader Kushal Dhuri said that just as guidelines are issued regarding pollution control and cleanliness during Diwali, Ganesh Utsav, and other festivals, a clear SOP should be formulated for Chhath Puja as well.
The MNS demand is not limited to guidelines alone. Party leaders have also suggested making arrangements for artificial ponds instead of performing rituals at sea beaches. They argue that this will help protect the sea and other public water bodies from pollution.
However, the MNS states that its demand is not against any religious festival, but is aimed at environmental protection and the implementation of uniform rules for all festivals.
Siddhesh Kadam objects to MNS demand
Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and a leader of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, has raised questions over the MNS demand. He said that the government and the Pollution Control Board remain vigilant regarding environmental protection, but Hindu festivals are targeted every single time.
Siddhesh Kadam accused the opposition of playing divisive politics through this issue. Referring to the Uttar Pradesh elections, he said that such politics is being played with North Indian voters in mind.
Anand Dubey hits back, mentions Balasaheb Thackeray's ideals
Anand Dubey, a North Indian leader and spokesperson for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, also targeted the MNS. He said that some people are only heirs to Balasaheb Thackeray's property, not his ideals.
Anand Dubey said that nature and the environment have always been cared for in Sanatan Dharma. Mentioning Chhath Maiya, Godavari, Durga, Ekvira, and Tulja Bhavani, he said that nature is given the status of a mother in religious traditions. He also expressed hope that those opposing it would be granted wisdom.
Chhath Puja will be celebrated from 13 to 16 November, BMC begins preparations
This year, the festival of Chhath Puja will be celebrated from 13 to 16 November. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is making preparations for the convenience of devotees at puja sites in Mumbai.
To ensure puja organizers do not face difficulties in obtaining permissions, a single-window system has been started at the departmental level. Additionally, nodal officers are being appointed for coordination at the puja ghats.
Preparations are underway to provide drinking water, mobile toilets, changing rooms for women, cleanliness, and security arrangements at beaches and major puja sites. There is also a plan to deploy CCTV cameras, lighting, fire brigades, and lifeguards for crowd management.
As such, this controversy that has arisen before Chhath Puja is no longer limited to pollution control. On one hand, there is a demand for environmental protection and uniform rules, while on the other, it is being described as politics aimed at targeting religious events. It remains to be seen whether the administration issues a separate SOP for Chhath Puja or ensures arrangements under existing rules.
